MADE IN GERMANY
My part-time internship at VICE Magazine in Williamsburg this summer was an amazing experience and got me into the editorial world, but back in Europe I thought VICE wasn’t ‘fashion’ enough for me and so I decided not to go to VICE Berlin but send my portfolio to a couple of indie fashion magazines all over Europe instead.
I was quite pumped when ZOO MAGAZINE invited me for an interview at their editors office in Amsterdam, since magazine has always been extremely important to me when it comes to inspiring layouts, styles and shoots!
ZOO MAGAZINE was founded in 2003 and is published in German and English four times a year. The fashion, art literature and architecture based magazine is predominantly based on a German subject matter but expanding more and more into an international context…
It’s support for photography has attracted some of the best photographers in the world such as: Steven Klein, Donald McPherson, David LaChappelle, Terry Richardson, Nobuyoshi Araki, Hedi Slimane and Karl Lagerfeld. The magazine is co-owned by musician Bryan Adams who also photographs for it.
I decided to take the train from Munich to Amsterdam with a 3 day rehab & relax stop at my moms house (she lives in the north of Germany, close to the sea). Since it was my first time in Amsterdam I was quite happy to have my 2 good friends Regner and Moritz who are both pretty successful advertiser and just moved there a couple of months ago (the Netherlands are known for their Ad Companies…).
They let me stay on their couch and showed me around and I cooked some German comfort food for them in return
Amsterdam is a really small old and charming city. With all it’s tiny little canals (called Grachten) its old buildings, houseboats and extremely tight streets, its faster to go by bike than by car and as a pedestrian you better watch out for the bikers!
Known for its laid-back pot and prostitution policy (coffee shops and red light districts), cheese, tulips and clogs but also its Scandinavian style and designs as well as lots of lots history and historic buildings like the Anne Frank House, 4 days weren’t enough to discover the capital of the Netherlands at all. And my feet looked worse than after 6 months New York after only two days!
And since I’m not a big stoner as well I stayed in every night focused on my job interviews, cooked a Bavarian traditional pork roast with dumplings for my two new husbands
and watched wale wars and Southpark with the guys.
Speaking of traditional Bavarian food back in Germany, started my favorite two weeks of the year! Early fall weeks or as I call it WIESN! (Bavarian slang for Oktoberfest)
Oktoberfest is not only a Beerfest but also the celebration of the Kings and Queens marriage in the 1800s and another good reason to dress up and wear a traditional Bavarian costume (Lederhosen for guys and a Dirndl for girls)
A traditional Bavarian dress (Dirndl) can cost from 200-2000 Euros (of course there is cheaper ones but those aren’t the real ones…
A pair of Lederhosen starts at about 150€ , the real traditional ones are around 500-1000 Euros.
I own 11 Dresses and one pair of Lederhosen (a girly version J
Even though it’s not the most comfortable dress I love wearing a Dirndl. It makes every girl look pretty and classy plus it is really flattering for almost everybody!
What else inspires me these days?!
Well after 2 weeks of craziness’ and boozing I’m spending most of my time in the gym (all this beer ufff!!!) or in bed watching movies. Maybe that’s why I’m totally in love with MC Hammer/Sleepwear Style pants?!
Or maybe its just the early 90ies and my amazing new vintage MOSCHINO belt?!
Other fashion obsessions for me right now are definitely crazy colors for make up and tights as well as prints and lace, old boyfriend and band shirts and of course my vintage floral Doc Marten boots…
I also love love love rave parties and electronic music (I’ve recently seen Paul Kalkbrenner, Lexy and K-Paul, Gus Gus, Digitalism and Boys Noize just to name a few…)
If I’m not at a rave, at home or the gym, you’ll probably find me at my friends apartment playing fun games like Activity or just dancing on their new kitchen table…
By the way, I got the job at ZOO MAGAZINE and I cant wait to tell you more about Amsterdam as soon as I move there and start my new Job next January…. J
