In a room of her own: LORICK SS09 by Abigail Lorick

Let them eat cake! The models, that is… Reminiscent of the colorful scene from “Marie Antoinette” (starring Kirsten Dunst), I spotted this delectable and joyous tart-fest as I entered the Lorick SS09 presentation: “A room of one’s own” held the evening of Thursday, September 3rd. It was the first day of New York Fashion Week and I was fully expecting to see wonderfully elegant clothes designed by Abigail, but I was equally impressed with the extravagant and diverse mis-en-scene atmosphere she had built, one that very much resembled an elaborate film set. The full-floor loft was divided into designated areas entitled Overgrown Garden, In Limbo, Bedroom Disaster, Cake Coma, After the Storm, and Demolition Party. I was lucky to have the opportunity to ask this striking young designer a few questions to shed light on her new collection and fabulously unique presentation-style:

How does your aesthetic/vision fit into (or digress from) the current discourse of fashion?
We beat to our own drum in all aspects of our collection. LORICK is about introducing the modern Lady. We have never designed a low-waisted pant and we enjoy producing summer gloves. We understand that true style goes beyond what you wear and hope to relay that to our ladies.

Can you talk more about how this collection “A room of one’s own” came about?
We were referencing the recession in 87′ , when all of these woman had to downsize their lives and living spaces which created a scene of over spoiled disaster. In Virginia Wolf’s A Room Of One’s Own, she explains that women essentially need money and their own room to be able to create and be independent. We were counter acting this concept, proving that our Ladies not only keep up their appearances and elegant independence, but also embrace all situations even if it is a seemingly disaster…. thus they stand as pillars of strength in difficult times.

Did you always plan to make this endeavor for the Lorick Lady or was that a happy accident?

I do not believe in accidents. Roanne Adams, our art director, initially came up with the visuale of upper class women in the late 80’s coping with the economy problems. That was the start of the Lorick spring 09 presentation.

Do you plan to expand your collection?
Absolutely. LORICK already stands as more than just a ready-to-wear collection, I believe we represent a lifestyle. We are truly excited to move forward with LORICK.
